Okinawa Main Island Loop: Shuri Castle, Markets and Churaumi — A Three-Day Stamp Route North from Naha

Okinawa · 8 places From Shuri Castle and the markets of Naha north to Cape Manzamo and the Churaumi Aquarium.
From Taiwan, the flight to Okinawa takes about an hour and a half, less than the high-speed train from Taipei to Kaohsiung.
It's so close that many people treat Okinawa as a nearby beach island: a sea-view hotel, a day on the sand, a yakiniku dinner. Nothing wrong with that, but Okinawa has another side. It was once an independent kingdom with its own royal castle, its own sacred sites and its own language. In Naha's market, the fish you buy downstairs can be cooked for you upstairs. Two hours' drive north, whale sharks several meters long glide through an aquarium tank.
This route starts in Naha and runs north up the main island. Eight places and eight stamps show you the Okinawa beyond the beach.
The route at a glance
| Place | Category | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Makishi Public Market | Market | Naha |
| Okinawa Prefectural Library | Library | Naha |
| Shuri Station | Railway station | Naha |
| Shurijo Castle Park | Historic site | Naha |
| Nakagusuku Castle Ruins | Historic site | Nakagusuku |
| Cape Manzamo | Nature | Onna |
| ORION HAPPY PARK | Factory tour | Nago |
| Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium | Zoo & aquarium | Motobu |
The first four are in Naha and easy to reach by monorail. From Nakagusuku onwards you'll need a car, heading north all the way to the Motobu Peninsula.
Makishi Public Market: buy downstairs, eat upstairs
Known as "Naha's kitchen," the Makishi Public Market is just off Kokusai-dori. The ground floor is stall after stall of fish, meat and Okinawan produce: tropical fish so brightly colored they look painted, whole pig faces, strings of sea grapes. Just looking is half the fun.
The best part is how it works: choose your seafood downstairs, take it up to a restaurant on the second floor and have it made into sashimi, soup or tempura. Fish you picked yourself always tastes better.
Check in once you're full. Your first stamp in Okinawa tastes of the sea.
Okinawa Prefectural Library: treasure above the bus terminal
The prefectural library sits above Naha Bus Terminal, and few tourists think to go up. But its fifth floor holds a huge collection of Okinawan local materials: Ryukyuan history, dialects and folklore, a whole floor of it.
Spend some time on your first day leafing through old photo books of Okinawa, and the castle ruins and streets you see over the next few days will mean a lot more.
Shuri Station: the gateway to the royal castle
Take the Okinawa monorail (Yui Rail) to Shuri Station, the starting point for Shuri Castle. The castle gates are about a 15-minute walk from the station.
The monorail runs from the airport to Shuri, with views over Naha from above along the way. Collect this stamp on the platform, and then it's time to step into the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Shurijo Castle Park: the heart of a kingdom
Shuri Castle was the royal castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom. For centuries it was the political and spiritual center of an independent kingdom that received envoys from China, Japan and Southeast Asia.
The 2019 fire that destroyed the red main hall was heartbreaking for many. The hall has since been rebuilt with traditional techniques, its vermilion pillars and dragon ornaments restored piece by piece. Stand on the castle walls with all of Naha below and imagine the view the kings once had.
Nakagusuku Castle Ruins: stone walls along a ridge
Drive north from Shuri to the Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, one of the best-preserved Ryukyuan castles (gusuku). Its curved limestone walls wind along the ridge as if they grew out of the hill.
There are far fewer people here than at Shuri, so you can walk the walls in peace. At the highest point, the Pacific is on one side and the East China Sea on the other, with a wind strong enough to make you brace yourself. It's the most overlooked stop on the route, and the most unforgettable.
Cape Manzamo: an elephant's trunk at sunset
Head to the west coast and Cape Manzamo in Onna. This grassy plateau sits on limestone cliffs above clear turquoise water, and it's famous for a rock shaped like an elephant's trunk.
Come in the late afternoon. As the sun sinks into the East China Sea, the whole cliff turns gold. Check in at sunset: this stamp is worth the wait.
ORION HAPPY PARK: the taste of Okinawa
Further north in Nago is the brewery behind Orion, Okinawa's local beer. Tour the production line, watch bottles being filled and capped, and finish with a tasting of beer fresh from the brewery.
If you're the one driving, choose a soft drink for the tasting. Drink-driving penalties in Japan are severe, and passengers can be penalized too.
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: face to face with whale sharks
The last stop is Churaumi Aquarium in Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula. In front of the huge Kuroshio Sea tank, everyone goes quiet without meaning to: whale sharks drift slowly past, and manta rays seem to fly through the water.
Outside the aquarium is the sea of Ocean Expo Park. After the whale sharks, sit on the grass and watch the real ocean for a while. Check in here for your eighth stamp, and the Okinawa Main Island Loop is complete.

Before you go
- Opening hours, closing days and ticket prices can change, so check each place's official website before you set off.
- Public transport in northern Okinawa is limited, so renting a car is best. Japan drives on the left. Drivers from Taiwan need a Japanese translation of their license, arranged in advance, to rent and drive a car in Japan.
- Churaumi Aquarium gets very busy on weekends and holidays, so set off early.
- Summer to autumn is typhoon season, so keep an eye on the weather before you go.
